Glaucoma

Overview

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because in the early stages of the disease glaucoma doesn’t cause any pain or vision loss. Of the 3 million Americans with glaucoma, only about half are aware they have the disease. Glaucoma occurs when there is damage to the optic nerve in the eye. The optic nerve is responsible for transferring electrical impulses or visual messages produced in your eye to the center of your brain that is responsible for vision.

Early detection and treatment of glaucoma is crucial to prevent the irreversible vision loss that can be caused by glaucoma. Many glaucoma patients are not diagnosed until they seek care when symptoms occur and this is often too late for effective treatment.

Treatment

There is no cure for glaucoma. However, there are excellent treatments available that can significantly slow the damage caused by glaucoma. Treatment options include topical eye drops, oral medication, laser surgery and more advanced forms of glaucoma surgery.
