Brown opened the private practice in 1974 after a year as instructor in the eye department at the University of Iowa Medical School.

National Eye Institute (clinical research in corneal diseases) included work on tissue typing in corneal transplantation and therapeutic uses of soft contact lenses. Was one of 12 original investigators for the soft contact lens industry.
